In some areas of the US, a 'curfew' is imposed, in which teenagers are not allowed to be out of doors after a particular time at night unless they are accompanied by an adult What is your opinion about this?
Â
Parents need to consider the requirement and implications of ‘curfew’ on teenagers. I believe that this practice, wherein children are forbidden to leave home at night without supervision is an appropriate practice for a variety of reasons. In this essay, I will discuss them in detail.
One of the most important causes of this restriction is to ensure the physical security of children. This is because many major cities in the U.S. are particularly vulnerable to criminal activities after sunset as the crowd on the streets starts thinning in the late evening hours and therefore, it is difficult to get assistance from the residents if the child gets into trouble concerning their physical wellbeing. For example, a recent study showed that New York City reported a majority of the more armed robberies in night hours as compared to the day time. Therefore, sending a young child alone during the night may seem like taking an unnecessary risk.
In addition to safety, the ‘curfew’, as a punishment, also helps to instill a sense of disciple in the growing children. There are instances where youngsters can start acting in an inappropriate manner which may be disrespectful or hurtful to others. In these situations, a ‘curfew’ for a limited period can act as an effective punishment and future deterrent for teenagers.
In conclusion, I believe that the ‘curfew’ is an effective technique for maintaining the security and discipline among teenagers. Thus, the use of this method needs to be actively encouraged by parents and guardians.
