In the past century, travelling for business and pleasure has seen a multifold rise as compared to before. In this essay, I will look into the cause of this increase in travel and describe its advantages for our everyday lives.

The major reason for ever increasing number of travellers is the improvement of transportation systems in terms of travel time and cost of travel. Looking firstly at the time factor, the introduction of airplanes has dramatically reduced our travel times. For example, a ship ride from New York to London used takes at least 2-3 weeks whereas the journey can now be completed in a modern airliner within 8-10 hours.  These reduced times allow a much wider set of people to start travelling since they no longer have to leave work or spend a long time on travel. Moving towards the topic of money, the development of newer mass transportation solutions like trains and planes have decreased the prices of air and land travel. This has made travelling much more affordable and thus encouraged a larger part of the population to take it up for pleasure and business.

The first major benefit of travelling is stress relaxation through holidays. This is especially true for a significant portion of our population that work in regular office jobs throughout the year and often suffer from work fatigue and related stress. A yearly holiday for these people to a faraway country goes a long way in relieving the work pressure and getting them back into a proper mental state before restarting work. The other significant advantage of travelling is for the business community. In today’s globalized world, business owners often have suppliers and customers in different continents. Visiting these vendor or client location often helps to develop a personal rapport with the stakeholder and generally leads to improved relations and higher revenue for the travelling businessman.

In conclusion, faster and cheaper means of travel have led to a sharp rise in the number of travellers in recent years. The important benefits of this trend include mental relaxation for tourists and better opportunities and revenue for businessmen.
