Some people believe academic success depends mostly on having a good teacher. Others argue that it is the attitude of the student that matters the most. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
A teacher has been an integral part of our learning phase for centuries. They inculcate the knowledge in their disciples and aid in their growth. Some opine that a good mentor can guide a student to achieve extraordinary results, while others argue that the results may vary depending on the behavior of a student. In my view, a student’s involvement can make a significant impact regardless of a teacher’s excellence.
An exceptional instructor not only inculcates interest for a subject in a student but also gathers views from various textbooks over the years and imparts the collective understanding to his followers along with his added perception. There have been instances in our history where a tutor has kindled extraordinary success to his followers. For example, Anand Kumar from Patna has mentored 30 students from an unprivileged background and helped them to get admission in IIT. Notwithstanding the lack of resources, these students made it to the best institutes. Hence, a mentor can leave a significant mark on the student’s performance.
On the other hand, a student may or may not be able to extract all the knowledge when studying under a mentor. Their level of interest may determine the grasping power and if he wants to explore more in the subject. An inclination towards knowing more helps a student to dive deep, besides the lessons given by faculty. It is seen that when a skilled teacher teaches a class of 60 students, it is only a few that get good grades depending on the efforts they make in that subject. For instance, Fungsuk Wangdo, an eminent personality from Ladakh, is well known for his academic excellence. He indulges deeper into the subjects and performs experiments in physics and chemistry for his understanding. His curious mind and interest in learning caused his excellence.
To conclude, although the effect of a good teacher can improve a student’s grade, in my view, a student himself holds more weightage on his grade in addition to a teacher’s support.
